Cultivating Pathways to Success

Friday Focus - 9/19/25

Posted Date: 9/19/25 (9:00 AM)

A black and white banner with the words 'Friday FOCUS' and spotlights. This week, our focus in our our brand new, full-time Mental Health Specialist.

Alabama is leading the way in Mental Health Awareness and Services. Alabama has set the standard for Student Mental Health Support! And we, Chilton county, have a full-time Mental Health Specialist, Marissa Dicus.

Alabama is leading the nation in addressing student mental health by placing Mental Health Service Coordinators (MHSCs) in schools across the state. Originally launched as a state-funded pilot in 2020-'21 across 102 districts, the program has expanded and reached every district, charter school, and statewide magnet school this year '25-'26. We have 158 coordinators this school year employed in each Alabama school district.

Supported by legislation, funding and specialized training, MHSCs act as essential connectors between schools, families, and mental health providers-making it easier for students to get the help they need, when they need it.

SO What does our MHSC and other MHSCs Do:
  • Coordinate Services: Manage and streamline access to school-based and external mental health services.
  • Engage Students & Families: Serve as a trusted resource to help families navigate the often confusing mental health system.
  • Promote Awareness: Organize events and programs to reduce stigma and increase understanding of mental health.
  • Support Staff: Train teachers and staff to recognize signs of mental health challenges and respond appropriately. One way we do this is by Youth Mental Health First Aid, and our very own MHSC is a trained instructor.
  • Respond to Crisis: Offer immediate Tier 3 intervention and connect students to professional care during emergencies.
  • Advocate in the Community: Partner with local organizations to bring in programs on issues like bullying, suicide prevention and resilience.
Why it Matters:
With growing mental health concerns among youth, early intervention is critical. MHSCs not only help students in crisis but also build a culture of wellness, ensuring students learn lifelong coping skills and families feel supported. Alabama's model is now being studied and emulated by other states.
